Kerikeri High School’s Senior Hospitality Team has had huge success within the few weeks.
At the Northern Regional Salon Culinaire competitions held in Whangarei, the team of 8 won a total of 2 Gold and 6 Silver medals – in the process winning every class they were entered in. Standout performances came from Michelle Barnfather with her ‘Men in Black’ themed Table setting, and Petra Matich’s Gold medal-winning Café-style sandwich.
The same team were then invited to stay at the Hilton Hotel in Auckland last week where they defended their My Kitchen Rules title against a team from Auckland’s NZMA consisting of fulltime tertiary-level Hospitality students. Despite having to compete against much older opposition, the team’s ‘Taste of Kerikeri’ themed buffet and level of service was overwhelmingly voted the best by Hilton staff. The winning menu included Kerikeri Lemonade, Bay of Islands Kingfish sliders, Kumara and Orange Salad, Max Coffee Mocha Brownie with poached Kerikeri tamarillo and Makana Toffee Crunch crumble.
For their outstanding efforts, each member of the team has been offered work experience in the department of their choice at the Hilton, with the potential for employment. The team would like to thank all of the local businesses that have provided product and support.
